Alphabet for RINO
Alkupamaus = A task track organized by HAMKO in Hämeenlinna, held at the start of a school year
Anniversary gala = A valuable academic dinner event where the members, actors and partners of a particular association are thanked and celebrated; the dress code is usually a black tie, but one can show their personality; ceremonial ribbons are commonly worn at the galas; during the gala, it is also customary to sing together, however unlike a sitz, extra lyrics are usually not permitted and song requests are to be directed towards a song master
Appro = a pub crawl; an event, where one visits multiple bars and collects stamps to a pass, usually with annual limits; e.g. Rixu Abro is a pub crawl held in Riihimäki during autumn
ASTin = an annual nationwide cruise for engineering students, usually held in October
Board = the governmental body of RINO, which implements the decisions made by the associations assembly; the board is comprised of a chairperson, a vice-chair, a secretary, a treasurer, 0–9 other board members and 0–3 deputies
Ceremonial ribbon = a ribbon worn during dignified events such as in anniversary galas; one wears a ribbon to signify what association the wearer represents; RINO's ribbon is purple and lime green, and can be purchased at RINO's Tyrmä
Cognac ears = a headpiece made by folding a napkin; a common habit in anniversary celebrations is to fold the napkins after the dessert
Engie = an engineer
Engineer's Cap = the main symbol of profession for engineers and engineering students, approved by the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland; the octagonal, purple cap was envisioned by Heikki Silván, an engineering student from Helsinki in 1969; the right to use a cap starts from the first vappu during your studies: capping events are held all over Finland on the 30th of April, where engineering students get the permission to wear the cap from the chairperson of their local association; RINO organizes the capping at a statue that changes every year
Engineer Hike = a hiking event for engineering students held at the Pyhä-Luosto national park in autumn
Fresher = the most common name for a first-year student in Finland; an equivalent term for engineering students is tursas
General meeting = a general assembly for all members of RINO held twice a year, where e.g the board members are chosen; the general meeting is the upmost decision-maker of RINO, which sets the policies implemented by the board
HAMK = Häme University of Applied Sciences
HAMKO = Student Union of Häme University of Applied Sciences; a student union that promotes the interests of students in all of HAMK; RINO is not a part of HAMKO, but a separate association that co-operates with HAMKO to e.g. distribute student cards
HIOP ry = Hämeenlinna Engineering Students, one of 24 local associations of the Union of Engineering Students alongside RINO; one of three engineering student associations in HAMK; is also in charge of representing the engineering students in Forssa
HyRi ry = the Engineers of Hyvinkää-Riihimäki; a member association of the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland, which represents the interests of working engineers in Hyvinkää and Riihimäki, and additionally Loppi, Hausjärvi and Janakkala
HÄPI ry = Hämeen Pinkit; an association that takes care of advocating the interests of all students of health and social services at HAMK, and organizes events in Hämeenlinna
HÄTÄ ry = Hämeenlinna BBA students; an association that takes care of advocating the interests of all BBA students at HAMK, and organizes events in Hämeenlinna
IL ry = the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland; a labour union for professional engineers; member associations include HyRi and IOL
IOL ry = the Union of Engineering Students, a member association of the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland, which represents the interests of engineering students nationwide; 24 local associations operate under IOL, including RINO, HIOP and VARO
IOP = the Engineering Student Days; the largest engineering student event in Finland which is held usually in April and lasts for several days; is held at an annually changing location at the behest of the local engineering student association
KeHä = the engineering student associations of Central Finland and Tavastia, a union of six local associations which works towards collaboration between the associations: member associations include RINO as well as HIOP (the Hämeenlinna Engineering Students), JIO (the Engineering Students of Jyväskylä), VARO (the Engineering Students of Valkeakoski), TIRO (the Engineering Students of Tampere) and LIRO (the Engineering Students of Lahti)
KeHä-cup = a trophy awarded to the local association that wins the KeHä-olympics held once a year; the winning association is expected to add an object of any kind to the cup; the cup is composed of i.a. a 15 kg slab of concrete
Kickstart = a task track catered towards new students at the Riihimäki campus, held in January or February
KoPo = representative of educational policy; a board member of RINO, who takes care of student advocacy
Kumivene = "rubber boat", a student cruise organized annually by HÄTÄ and HIOP which is catered towards all students at HAMK; held during the autumn
Kurkun kostuttajat = "pickle moisteners", an alumni club established by former active members of RINO and HIOP, which is open for all formers engineering students of HAMK
Kyykkä = Finnish skittles; a traditional outdoor sport, very popular among student circles; the objective of the game is to throw clubs or karttus at cylinder-shaped blocks or kyykkäs and remove them from the game area using as little amount of throws as possible
Laulumatti = an engineering student's song book; a common habit is to write extra lyrics and greeting from fellow students to one's book; the most important tool for a party-goer since 2004!
Laureamko = the student union of the Laurea University of Applied Sciences; RINO sometimes collaborates with the student union's campus team in Hyvinkää
Loppurysäys = A task track organized by HAMKO in Hämeenlinna, held at the end of a school year
Mamelukkikala = "mameluke fish", RINO's very own special drink which according to legend is made from the roe of mameluke fish roaming in the Vantaa River
Marko = a black mannequin armed with a sword that resides in the "Tyrmä"
Mentor = a board member of the IOL, who acts as a direct link between RINO and IOL; the mentor of RINO for the year 2025 is Katariina Jokimäki
Overalls = a signature garment for students in Finland; the overalls are decorated with patches, usually given at events or sold by student associations; all engineering students in HAMK have black overalls, however, RINO has unique overalls with a purple pocket in the right leg and a lime green pocket in the left leg; the overalls can be fitted and bought from RINO's "Tyrmä"
Penni = a rocking horse residing in the "Tyrmä"
Poikkitieteellinen Telttasauna ry = "the Interdisciplinary Tent Sauna Association", an association founded in 2023 by former active members of RINO, which works to uphold and develop interdisciplinary sauna culture; the main attraction of the association is a tent sauna made completely out of recycled materials, such as old student overalls
Raino = RINO's dear mascot, the little purple rhino
RINO's Riihimäki day = an event held in March, where students gather around the Riihikivi stone; the students will be granted the right to raise their overalls during the event
Riina = RINO's second mascot, Raino's girlfriend
RINO ry = the Engineering Students of Riihimäki; one of the 24 local associations of Union of Engineering Students, which advocates the interests of it's members and holds events for the students of HAMK's campus in Riihimäki; one of three engineering student associations in HAMK
Rinon rykäys = "Rino's harrumph", an annual event similar to appros held in September of October, where bars are visited and stamps are collected to a pass; the unique factor is that the drinks are named after all of the letters in the Finnish alphabet, giving a total of 28 stamps to be collected solo or in a group; the afterparty has an annually changing theme
Sitz = an academic banquet with rules and customs that one learns best by participating; singing is a vital part of sitz, and getting a song book such as the Laulumatti is highly encouraged for the sitz; the theme and dress code can change depending on the sitz
Tursajaiset = a task track catered towards new students at the Riihimäki campus, held in September
Tyrmä = "the dungeon", a lounge open to all students located in the room D205, on the second floor of the D-wing near the main lobby; RINO's office is in the same room
VARO ry = the Engineering Students of Valkeakoski, one of 24 local associations of the Union of Engineering Students alongside RINO and HIOP; one of three engineering student associations in HAMK
YH = contact person; an active member of RINO, who works as a liaison between the board of RINO and students; responsibilities include the announcement of upcoming events
